In the 1950s, Jack Kerouac wrote that he dreamed of an "American Dharma" of American Buddhists with their own unique legends, heroes, and home grown sages. Well, Kerouac may not have gotten an dream of an American Buddhist wonderland, but he was right about one thing: the unique nature of "religion" in America.
